Team Fuel member, Todd Jewell— the “Jewell Thief”
We spoke with body builder and Team Fuel member, Todd Jewell, and asked him how he got the nickname “the Jewell Thief.”
Q: You’ve collected a few nicknames over the years. Tell us how you got this one.
A: That was one of the many names given to me after I intervened in a 2007 bank robbery.
Q: OK, so you weren’t the one doing the stealing! Who was the perp?
A: The man that I apprehended was actually wanted by the FBI in connection with eight other bank robberies over the previous eight weeks!
Q: So what happened?
A: The man attacked a female bank teller and I wasn’t about to watch that happen. There’s nothing I hate more than seeing a woman being physically abused by a man. When I saw him lunge at the teller, I ran at him and took him to the ground. We struggled for the next minute or so—the man sustained multiple lacerations to his face and several broken ribs. After I kept him on the ground for almost ten minutes the police got there and took him into custody.
Q: What kind of conviction did the guy get?
A: He only got five and a half years in prison for the whole string of robberies. This was his third strike so needless to say I was disappointed by the light sentencing.
