Skiing in Park City, Utah

Want to know more about the city where freestyle skier, Sean Hartel, spends his summers training?

Park City, Utah, just outside Salt Lake City, offers a world of skiing and snowboarding opportunities, amidst an average of about 400 inches of snow a year. There are many resorts featuring Utah’s trademark fluffy powder snow which is formed from a result of cold temperatures mixed with dry air and the moisture from the Great Salt Lake.

There are also many terrain parks for every level of athlete. One of them is the Utah Olympic Park, built for the 2002 Olympics. The park includes bobsled and luge tracks, Nordic jumps, an alpine slide, zip lines and a 100-foot wide concrete splash pool. These are the facilities Sean uses during his summer training.

“The setup up [of the park] gives freestyle skiers and snowboarders the chance to learn dangerous flips and spins in a safer environment than an icy landing,” says Sean.

The park is also where Sean brings young athletes participating in the Tahoe Freeride Company. These skiing and snowboarding teams are made up of riders between the ages of 15 and 20 who are pursuing skiing or snowboarding as a career. Sean started the Company and teaches the skills needed to be successful, professional athletes, focusing on backcountry freestyle, park and pipe, big mountain, creative jibbing and competitive mentality.
